MSO 2011

 Se están jugando las MSO en Londres. El 25 de agosto hay un campeonato de otelo. Además, muchos otros juegos, incluyendo mundiales de algunos.

Parece ser que hay un "pentamind", que no sé qué juegos incluye pero seguro que viene en la página del enlace anterior. El año pasado lo ganó un español, aunque siento no poder contar quién es ni exactamente qué ganó.

Además del pentamind hay otros eventos multijuegos : abstract games, decamentathlon y trigames.

La crisis del número de jugadores

En el grupo en Internet inglés están tratando el tema de la escasez de jugadores. Siguen comentando, pero ya podemos hacer un pequeño resumen de lo dicho hasta ahora:

I must confess that my attendance at regionals dropped off when the entrance fee/cost to play/participate rose dramatically.

The reason the fee was raised to £10 was to make the regionals pay for themselves.

It is the cost of travel that is stopping me going to regionals.

Evidentemente, el precio. Precio por viajar y precio por jugar. Señalan que, a partir de distintas experiencias, si se sube el precio por participar, baja el número de jugadores. No olvidan la razón para subir el precio: asumir los costes.

La diferencia de juego. Si alguien pierde mucho sale más descontento de un torneo. Una forma de disminuir este descontento, así como mejorar otros aspectos, es el trato personal de los jugadores más experimentados.

2. start/finish times to fit travel plans
3. date to catch more players (not winter or summer!)
4. reduced to every two/three/etc years

Aparte de saber las causas, hay que buscar soluciones: trasladar el torneo a un lugar más barato o fácil de llegar; ajustar mejor la agenda; evitar invierno o verano; ampliar la frecuencia y jugar cada 2 o 3 años.

1. It is just too easy to play good people online now. It needs to be stressed that 25mins on the clock is a different experience to 5mins maximum (including the fact that you do find yourself learning through your own thought processes with the longer time).

2. I used to love the days where everybody stood round a table and discussed a position animatedly before the start of the next round even if I didn't understand what was going on. Although this still happens, it is now too easy for somoeone to pipe up and say "...just checked it on Zebra and this is the correct move..." which is no use to anyone in terms of learning about how to think like a human about the game.

Un par causas de tipo generacional: ahora la gente juega en Internet y para qué se va a mover de sus sillones; no se valoran las diferencias entre éste y el presencial. Y luego Zebra y otros: ellos dan la solución y le quitan misterio.

I decided to add an extra 10 min between each round so that everyone will have time to analyze their games together with their opponent, and put more focus to that rather than just getting on with the next round.

Me parece estupendo que aparte de valorar la situación, encontrar causas y proponer soluciones, se haga algo para aplicarlas. En este caso, añadir 10 minutos extra entre rondas para dejar a los jugadores que analicen la partida.
